Comics are truly where I got my start. While I had written, and shopped, The Brittle Riders it didn’t have a home yet and its prospects looked grim. Into that dire world fell Legends Parallel. We sold the comic in bars, restaurants, computer repair shops, pawn shops, and, believe it or not, comic book stores. The important thing was it sold. The second most important thing was people liked it. Still do.

Brian “Bigger Lion” Daniel, the best man at my wedding and creator of Legends Parallel, wanted more titles than just Legends Parallel and opened up Hadithi Sambamba Comix in 2016. Tiles have come and gone, but the company remains and is growing steadily. And, now, I’m honored to tell you it has taken a big step to becoming an indie comic powerhouse.

First, we have signed an East Coast distribution deal with Vivid Panel Comics. This deal will make all Hadithi Sambamba titles available at New York Comic Con and many other East Coast conventions. Also, Vivid owns a store so, even if you miss a con, you can still buy copies. As well you should.

Second, over on the West Coast, we have re-partnered with our old pals at Nerdanatix. While they got destroyed by the pandemic, they have gotten the band back together and are up and running stronger than ever. For now they will concentrate on digital sales, but are looking to get back in stores at the first opportunity.

We’re also setting up an online store to catch anyone who gets missed by our distributors. It’s still a work in progress, but you can check it out here. All products are live, so if you order something you will get a nice digital copy for your collection. Nothing’s stopping you, that’s all I’m saying.

Last Sunday was our one year anniversary. The wedding was a beautiful affair, you can watch it here if you’d like, and it cemented what I’ve known for a while. I love her so much that I was willing, and able, to ignore how much I hate wearing suits and being in crowds. It was a long, strange, trip to get there and I find myself looking forward to the rest of this new journey into the unknown. As long as I’m with her we’ll be fine.

As some of you may remember, after that things began heating up for The Brittle Riders. I’ve been in meetings, some of those meetings had meetings with other meetings, and so on. One offshoot of all this hoo hah is I’m, once again, being invited to interact with humans. I’m going to share some of the more intimate conversations, a/k/a podcasts, but would like to remind you that I and twenty thousand of my closest friends will be at the Huntsville Expo in Huntsville, Alabama from April 11th to April 15th, 2024. This con draws some A-list stars, is near the Rocket Center, home of the internationally renowned Space Camp, and down the block from the main offices of my publisher, Azoth Khem. It’s going to be a blast.

Angie, my new BFF, joined me in discussing everything from creating properly erotic love scenes to building a world to developing a character. It was lots of fun.

I live in Chicago with my beautiful wife, we drive our beautiful automobile, so I celebrate this holiday. To all my Canadian friends, I hope you had a wonderful freedom celebration on the first. It seems that observing the moment a country throws off the yoke of British rule is kind of a global event, just memorialized on different days. I used to work for a record company and every time something bad was about to happen to an artist that would magically enrich the company, the president would say MAG-nifi-CENT. I didn’t stay long. I worked for another company where the president would constantly say we needed to work on our “kung fu” even though no one in the office studied any martial arts. He also used to say completed projects were baked. I doubt he could find a kitchen, let alone use a stove, but here we are.

I share these bon mots for no particular reason other than, like those jobs, I’m about to put something in my rear view mirror. Specifically, all of the parts of The Brittle Riders investment package. And, since you’ve been along for the entire ride, I’m going to share the final products with you.

The first two files, the script and the pitch book, are PDFs. If you have Chrome as your browser they will simply open up. Otherwise you may have to download them and view them later.

First, I give you THE SCRIPT! Admit it, you heard a fanfare when you read that. Encompassing the first third of BOOK ONE of the trilogy, it introduces viewers to the world The Brittle Riders inhabit, the denizens of the plains they call home, and sets up the conflict that will permeate the series should this all come to fruition.

If nothing else, it will make some people queasy. I guess I’ll take what I can get.

Second up is the PITCH BOOK. Think of this as a power point presentation to encourage people to read the script. It’s a collection of images and brief synopsis of various scenes. The images are of the titular characters as well as others who live in this world. They also include glimpses of what Anapsida, home of all that is evil, might look like. It’s a combination of original art mixed with some AI, all properly credited, to help immerse neophytes into the workings of my squishy brain.

Lastly, THE BRITTLE RIDERS FINAL TONE REEL!!

I began to understand how hard getting this done would be when the third company that does these things turned me down. Oh, sure, they wished me luck too, but they still turned me down.

Honestly, I feel as though Sisyphus finally cleared the mountain top. This has been a labor of love, to be sure, but a labor nonetheless. And, without the help of people like you who critiqued everything and suggested stuff I’d missed, I’m not sure any of this would have gotten done at all. Certainly not as well as it has.

Do you remember when, two weeks ago, I told you the tone reel for The Brittle Riders was 100% complete, no fooling? Yeah, it turns out I was fooling. After I published it I got a few messages from music producers I used to work with and they all had the same suggestion. So, I passed it along to the nice people at Fredits and the result was better. Naturally, that gave me an idea, which I also passed along, and then, finally and irrevocably, it was done.

In other news, I’m finally putting on pants and going to appear in public. I will be appearing at a few libraries this summer and then at WindyCon this November. The last time I attended was 2019. It was a successful venture and I found rabid fans of some of my comics who waited to meet me rather than buying stuff the traditional way. As the cool kids like to say, “That’s inspiring.”

I’m looking to add some more dates to my calendar, but the pandemic took its toll on cons. Three of my favorites are gone completely. Others are so scaled down it’s not even worth thinking about going. And, while Desiree Duffy has built a virtual duchy with her semi-annual Books that Make You cyber conventions, very few of the cyber-cons that sprung up in 2020 have survived.

To be honest, I had assumed hybrid conventions would sprout up to take advantage of guests who lived considerable distances away from convention sites and allow non-local visitors to enjoy the proceedings. For whatever reasons, while there have been some attempts by larger cons, most have just said “the hell with it” and went back to how things have always been done or simply shut down and took up new hobbies.

Lastly, the notoriously “BOOBTASTIC” Legends Parallel issue four, Within the Otherwhere, is complete and being packaged for sale to wonderful consumers like you … and you …. and, most certainly, YOU!

Last weekend, for the first time since November of 2019, I went to a convention and sold comics and books and stuff. Well, not stuff since I didn’t have any stuff for sale. I had bookmarks and business cards, but I gave those away instead of trying to sell them.

I, along with the owner of Hadithi Sambamba Comix – Brian “Bigger Lion” Daniel, went to the Motor City Black Age of Comics. On Saturday, all my finely honed elevator pitches I use to entice people to pay attention and buy stuff turned into random syllables which may, or may not, have resembled words. I was never so nervous in my life. Everything was new again. I stared at my books and comics like I’d never seen them before.

By the end of the day I finally found my groove. On Sunday I was my usual mix of a force of nature blended with a toddler on meth.

All in all we had fun. It felt good to reunite with old friends, make some new ones, see my family whom I haven’t seen since the pandemic, and generally get my feet wet and begin to rejoin the human race.

Last week I told you about the tone reel being done by Freddy Noriega from Fredits. I even shared an unfinished version with you. Much to my surprise, several of you wrote me to offer solid advice on how to make it better. Others just seemed impressed and happy to finally see progress. No matter what, all comments were appreciated.

That being said, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that playing it on a large screen with killer sound truly enhances the experience. Freddy really went the extra mile for us.

I’m going to be taking next week off to spend some time with my lovely bride and work on the script for the pilot. Also, in my copious amounts of free time, I’m assembling a Pitch Book. That’s a visual synopsis of the story which contains incentives for investors to invest. Not financial incentives, anything like that only happens with lawyers in the room, but valid reasons why someone should chuck several million dollars at my idea. Believe it or not, there are some.

Not that long ago and certainly not that far, far away, I promised I’d share things as they became real. Today is my first chance to keep that promise so I’m jumping on it like I’ve got extra quarters for the pony outside K-Mart.

I’d already told you Azoth Khem and I were preparing to work with Fredits, the editing and promotional company owned by – internationally acclaimed editor – Freddy Noriega. We did that and the preliminary results are in. I’ll share them in a moment, I just want you to understand what you’re about to see.

On top of his fascinating background, Freddy is a master of creating tone, or sizzle, reels. These are industry oriented shorts that use footage from other sources to create a single feel, or tone, so that investors and others will grasp what we’re trying to create. And, let’s be honest, The Brittle Riders is not easy to match with anything out there. I began to understand how hard it would be when the third company that does these things turned me down. Oh, sure, they wished me luck too, but they still turned me down.

Freddy not only accepted, he nailed it. This is a first draft, so there will be some minor changes, but I’m completely comfortable sharing what we have now.

The Brittle Riders Tone Reel

The bigger the screen, and the better the sound system, the happier you will be.

As you can tell we’re really upping our game. The idea is, over the next month or so, to have a complete package to present to possible investors or networks. We will have a complete script, pitch deck, and this reel, all focused on creating a pilot. We also have something called a “script bible.” Unlike it’s Judeo Christian namesake, it’s a simple tome. It breaks out all the episodes in the first season of The Brittle Riders should it ever get made. At this point it’s more of a “suggestion” than a “bible” since the pilot hasn’t been made. Nevertheless, I’m from Chicago so I follow the advice of the legendary Daniel Burnham; “Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will not themselves be realized. Make big plans, aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever growing insistency.”

My wife and I celebrated American Mother’s Day with her mom and step-dad. We had a lovely brunch at Scrementi’s, a popular Italian restaurant in the south suburbs, and got to spend some quality time all around. Life is short, a fact I’m reminded off more often than I’d care, so take advantage of it while you can.

In film related news, the nice people at Azoth Khem are partnering up with FREDITS, an internationally respected editing firm, to create a “Tone Reel” for The Brittle Riders. Due to the fact The Brittle Riders is such a unique universe, several companies were reluctant, I say that politely, to take this on. However, FREDITS had some solid ideas on how to bring this to life. It doesn’t have to be exact. It can’t be since no characters exist like these. But, if it can get close, and I believe it can, then investors and others will have a better idea of what they’re getting involved in.

To help that along, I have been assembling a Pitchbook as well. Think of it as a Power Point presentation, but without some rando droning on and on about annuities. In essence it’s a collection of images tied to a longer synopsis of the film. When used in conjunction with a tone reel, investors and others can have a solid grasp of what’s involved in under fifteen minutes. Given the nature of the entertainment industry in general, being able to make a complex presenttion in a a brief manner, is a blessing for all involved. Also, in the case of something this different, giving people a solid place to work from is needed.

Also, this week, we got a nice little present in the form of a professional review. Allow me to share.

The Brittle Riders Book One, by Bill McCormick, is the first book in a thrilling science fiction and fantasy trilogy. It takes readers on an intriguing journey through a unique and imaginative world. The story begins when a daring scientist, Edward Q. Rohta, created multiple species successfully to aid humans. The created species are used solely for slave labor. However, a chain of events that leads to an apocalypse begins when the created species, due to slave labor revolt, causing the death of every man, woman, and child on the planet.

The book takes us on a post-apocalyptic journey after the brutal end of humans with a new way of life entirely different from the world previously led by humans. But this new world comes with its own pain and suffering as a merciless ruler, which births the need for change.

I love how the author vividly describes the new world with attention to detail, weaving a thrilling tale infused with bits of dry humor. I thoroughly enjoyed how learning about the characters; from Geldish, a mysterious creature with great power who assembles the most unlikely yet dedicated group; Sland, N’leah, R’yune, and BraarB, all fringe dwellers who are quite used to living a life with no purpose beyond food, shelter, and clothing answered a call to embark on a journey along with Geldish to end the reign of a tyrant ruler, Xhaknar. This group of five embarks on a journey that tests them individually and as a group tyrant and learns to trust one another on a mission where one wrong step has catastrophic consequences. McCormick offers a refreshing and engaging reading experience for fans of the genre, weaving the tale in a way the readers can connect to the characters and the world they are in, while including using humor; the book explains serious events.

I give this book a 5 out of 5 rating. It is quite descriptive and well-explained, with bits of dry humor that help us understand our heroes better. The author, McCormick, skillfully develops their personalities, motivations, and backstories, allowing readers to understand the characters. I also admired how he ensured that the terms created for the book were well understood.

This book is recommended to fantasy and science fiction lovers as the author’s expertly an organized and detailed world. It’ll also make a fantastic read for lovers of thrillers and adventure.

In related news, the entire Brittle Riders series has now been re-released as second editions. The companion series, Goptri of the Mists, has its first book out, the second nearly finished with editing, and the third is on my computer begging for its sweet release.
